In their top-of-the-table winner-takes-all showdown away at second-placed Rochdale, it looked as though they would have to settle for the play-offs when the hosts scored in the 95th minute.
But Josh Stones equalised in the 103rd minute to get York their all-important draw and seal top spot in the National League – and the only automatic promotion place to League Two.
However, both goals were followed by pitch invasions as emotions spilt over for the opposing sets of fans.
And in a video that appears to have been taken by a Rochdale fan after the full-time whistle, things turned ugly.

York fans invade pitch as 102ND-MINUTE goal snatches craziest promotion ever
Amid the York celebrations, midfielder Hiram Boateng is on his knees with his head against the ground – no doubt taking in the magnitude of the hard-fought promotion and crazy finale.
But some fans who have invaded the pitch go up to him while he is down on the pitch.
One fan then appears to lay his hands on Boateng.
It is unclear if they support York or Rochdale.
Two stewards and two other fans coming from the direction of York’s away end jog over to try and resolve the situation by pulling the bald fan away.
But Boateng wriggles free before standing up and sidestepping around the Rochdale staff personnel.
He measures up the fan who appeared to be trying to pin him down or confront him while he was on the ground.
Boateng then unleashed a brutal single left hook.
The savage blow decked the fan, who stumbled backwards and collapsed to the pitch.
Video footage taken from the Rochdale home end picked up several supporters’ stunned reactions to the awful scenes.
JattvibeSport has contacted both York City and Rochdale for comment.
