Row around the renaming of Delhi’s Dyal Singh Evening College saw fresh escalation today, ahead of the Saturday meeting of the institution’s governing body which is scheduled to take a final call on the matter. The governing body of the college had in December 2025 passed the controversial proposal to rename Dyal Singh Evening College as Banda Singh Bahadur College. As per institutional rules, a governing body in a subsequent meeting confirms the agenda of the last meeting. This means the agenda on the renaming of Dyal Singh Evening College would be confirmed should the governing body, in its meeting tomorrow, stamp it.Ahead of such a prospect, the Staff Council members of the college, accompanied by leaders of Delhi University Teachers’ Association and other important elected members of the college, met governing body Chairman DS Chauhan today and demanded the revocation or suspension of the renaming agenda.“We have been assured by the Chairman that he would not permit the agenda of renaming should it imply relocation of the college. But we are not satisfied by this response. We want the legacy of Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia preserved,” Mithilesh Singh, president, Dyal Singh Evening College Staff Association, told The Tribune. He said the high-level college and DUTA delegation met Chauhan to stop the renaming agenda from being confirmed in the governing body meeting tomorrow.Earlier, the general body of the college staff association had unanimously resolved to withdraw the name change proposal after noting that mandatory consultations with the college teaching, non-teaching staff and students had not been undertaken.“Ordinance XX, Clause 7 of the Delhi University mandates that any change altering the character of the college shall be made only after talking to all stakeholders. The renaming issue was never discussed in the college staff council, the main representative body of the institution. It was straightaway passed by a governing body resolution on December 5, 2025. This is a violation of all norms,” Singh said. The delegation today urged Chauhan to order the Principal to call a staff council meeting on the issue.“The Chairman said he would consult with higher authorities and revert,” Singh said.He said the college was demanding a status quo on the name issue.
