Even as at least two cases have been registered across the state under the Jagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Act, 2026, the Punjab Police have made no arrests so far.The first case was lodged in Malout on April 30 after torn pages of Gutka Sahib were found scattered in Indira Basti of the town. The second incident was reported from Jalandhar on May 17, with pages found lying in waste in the lanes of Raja Garden locality. The cases are being investigated by a DSP-rank officer as per the provisions of the Act but there has been no headway in the investigations. The Jalandhar Commissionerate Police had rounded up three youths, who were complainants and the first few persons to report the matter. The police initially suspected them of being involved as they had been spotted in the area in CCTV footage that emerged after the incident. “We have interrogated them, but so far no arrest has been made,” said Jalandhar West ACP Aatish Bhatia.Sikh activists in Jalandhar have maintained that desecration could have been a thought-out conspiracy so as to enforce the newly-enacted law. They said a meeting had been organised by managements of various gurdwaras to oppose the implementation of the Act since it did not have the mandate of the Akal Takht a day before the incident. Many, including Jagjit Singh Gaba and Iqbal Singh Dhindsa, were of the view that both the incidents followed the same pattern. The activists have planned another meeting at Gurdwara Deewan Asthan to be presided over by Akal Takht acting Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj on Jattvibeday. The members shall demand withdrawal or review of the anti-sacrilege law.
