In an early morning action on Saturday, Delhi Police personnel in plain clothes swooped down on Jantar Mantar and removed activist Sonam Wangchuk from the site of his hunger strike, which entered its 21st day.Wangchuk, 59, was taken to the government-run Safdarjung Hospital, where doctors said he refused to accept treatment despite signs of dehydration and metabolic abnormalities. The status of Wangchuk’s health remained a matter of debate all day as his wife Gitanjali Angmo cautioned the hospital against administering the activist anything without their consent and sought his discharge for a second opinion.Even as the police cited a Delhi High Court order on Wangchuk’s health as a reason to shift him to a hospital, Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) leaders, Angmo and the Opposition attacked the government for the alleged high-handedness. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi went to the extent of accusing the government of resorting to “asatya (untruth) and himsa (violence)”.The timing of the action — two days ahead of the monsoon session of Parliament beginning Monday, also the day the CJP has called for a march to Parliament — has invited widespread anger. It triggered a surge of support for Wangchuk at Jantar Mantar, with CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke announcing an indefinite hunger strike in place of the Ladakhi leader. While Dipke and supporters were also removed from the protest site in the morning, they later returned to resume the agitation demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak. The exam has since concluded after a retest and declaration of results.Later, a woman hurled a blue ink-like liquid at Dipke while he was addressing a gathering.Meanwhile, Wangchuk has refused intravenous fluids, oral rehydration solution and other medications, doctors said in a detailed medical bulletin. It said Wangchuk was admitted at 7.40 am with a history of fasting from solid food for 20 days and generalised weakness.”There is no history of fainting attacks… At the time of admission, he was conscious with stable pulse, blood pressure and oxygen saturation. Signs of dehydration were seen. Blood gas analysis revealed compensated acidosis with decreased serum potassium and blood sugar of 78 mg/dl. Urinary ketones were 1+ at admission, rising to 3+ by 1 pm,” it said.Doctors said despite advice to take IV fluids, the patient refused medication and was being continuously monitored and counselled. It is learnt that doctors are also counselling Angmo to cooperate so treatment can begin start without further delay. However, speaking to The Tribune, Angmo said, “I don’t feel like keeping Wangchuk here. I would want to shift him somewhere else and get the tests done.”In a statement earlier today, the police said, “In the morning, as per directions of the Delhi High Court and a routine check-up, doctors arrived for medical examination of Wangchuk. Some protesters caused obstruction, leading to commotion.”The police said considering the delicate health condition of Wangchuk, on medical advice, he was taken to Safdarjung Hospital for examination and further intervention, as required.”Further, doctors have examined and assessed his health, where they have opined that due to prolonged fasting, he is weak and has signs of dehydration. He is under observation. Further tests are being conducted and his health condition is being continuously monitored under expert supervision,” the statement said.At Jantar Mantar, after Wangchuk’s removal, the police also tried to remove Neha, president, All India Students’ Association, which was resisted by protesters.Among those who reached the site were Yogendra Yadav and Manoj Jha. Manu Bhaker also shared a cryptic post on X, calling for change in the system without naming the CJP or Wangchuk.Importantly, removal of Wangchuk from Jantar Mantar was the first major action by the Delhi Police under new chief Anurag Kumar, who replaced Satish Golcha on Friday.
